Mesh vs. Ceramic vs. Kanthal Coils: How the Difference Really Feels

The coil type is usually printed in tiny letters on the packaging. At first, it doesn't sound like it would make much of a difference – until you compare two different types in the exact same device. Suddenly, you notice a completely different draw, a more intense flavour, and a totally different lifespan.

But what makes the individual coil materials so special, and which one best suits your vaping style? Here's what Kanthal, Mesh, and Ceramic actually do differently.

Kanthal Coils: The Reliable Standard


Kanthal – an alloy of iron, chromium, and aluminium – has been the absolute classic among coil materials for years, and for good reason. Kanthal wires heat up very evenly, are extremely inexpensive to produce, and behave absolutely predictably across a wide wattage range.

The downside of Kanthal is that these coils often have a somewhat shorter lifespan compared to more modern designs. The flavour development is also a little more subtle in direct comparison – though this is hardly noticeable in everyday use for occasional vapers. Mesh Coils: More Surface Area, Smoother Draw, and Intense Flavour


Unlike classic wound wire, mesh coils use a flat, net-like metal grid. This design massively increases the contact surface with the liquid wick. The advantages are obvious: the liquid vaporises extremely quickly, evenly, and without localised hotspots.

The result is a noticeably smoother, less harsh draw at the same power and outstanding flavour development. Because wear is reduced by the even heat distribution, mesh coils generally also last significantly longer than Kanthal. Although they are slightly more expensive to purchase, the upgrade is almost always worth it for most vapers due to the enormous flavour improvement.

Ceramic Coils: Built for Extreme Longevity and Consistency


Ceramic coils use a porous ceramic material that completely or partially replaces the classic cotton wick. The biggest advantage of this technology is its extreme heat resistance. Since ceramic cannot burn like cotton, these coils are extremely resistant to accidental "dry hits" and last an exceptionally long time.

Ceramic distributes heat incredibly evenly, which is why it is often used with viscous liquids or special concentrates. The disadvantage is the usually higher price. Additionally, some vapers find the flavour a nuance flatter in direct comparison to a fresh mesh coil – ultimately, personal preference decides here.

What Really Suits Your Vaping Style?


Which coil type is right for you depends entirely on your priorities:

  • The Saver: If you're looking for the cheapest, simplest option and want a solid everyday vaping experience, Kanthal is still your go-to.

  • The Connoisseur: If you want to get the maximum flavour out of your liquids and prefer a silky-smooth draw, there's no way around Mesh.

  • The Long-Lasting: If you use a device for special applications or are looking for an extremely robust system that can forgive an operating error, ceramic is worth the investment.

What Matters Even More Than the Material


No matter which coil you choose: the material cannot override the fundamental physics. The wattage set on your mod must always precisely match the coil's specified range.

Furthermore, proper "priming" (saturating a new coil before the first puff) is the most important step for a long lifespan. After filling, always give your new coil a few minutes for the material to fully soak with e-liquid.
